Weight-Loss Injections, What is it?

These weight-loss injections are a once-weekly injectable medication that’s FDA-approved to help with chronic weight management. On average, clients lose 15% of their initial body weight.

How does it work?

The injections work by mimicking a hormone called glucagon-like-peptide-1 (GLP-1) that targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and food intake. It is a powerful appetite suppressant. It also improves your body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels.

PRESCRIPTIVE, MEDICAL WEIGHT-LOSS

We are very excited to offer this newly FDA-approved, weight-loss injection!

In June 2021, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved a weight-loss injection (once weekly) for chronic weight management in adults who are overweight or obese with at least one weight-related condition (such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol), for use in addition to a reduced calorie diet and increased physical activity. This under-the-skin injection (subcutaneous) is the first approved drug for chronic weight management in adults with general obesity or overweight since 2014. The injection is indicated for chronic weight management in patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or greater who have at least one weight-related ailment or in patients with a BMI of 30 or greater.

Originally used for diabetes, a higher dose of the same drug was evaluated for weight-loss. The results were dramatic, with the average individual losing 15(+) % of their body weight during the clinic trial.

How it works: This weight-loss injection works by mimicking a hormone called glucalgon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and food intake; it is a powerful appetite suppressant. It also works by increasing the production of insulin and appears to enhance the growth of β cells in the pancreas, which are the sites of insulin production. Additionally, it inhibits a hormone that increases blood sugar. It has been known to aid not only in weight-loss but helps to lower glucose levels in those who are pre-diabetic or who have type 2 diabetes.

– Delays stomach emptying, leading to a feeling of fullness and smaller meal size
– Slows intestinal motility
– Lowers blood sugars, in part by reducing the production of sugar in the liver
– Stimulates insulin secretion by the pancreas

At Confident Med Spa, we start at a low dose which can be increased gradually over 12 weeks to a max of 2.4 mg weekly. Not all patients will need the max of 2.4 mg weekly though; it is common for patients to have great success with minimal side effects around 0.25 – 1 mg weekly.

For higher weight-loss benefits, we combine our weight-loss injections with B12 injections.

What to Expect:
For your initial visit, you will need to schedule an appointment with our office. Upon arriving for your appointment, you will have a little paperwork to complete, and then you will have your consultation with our Nurse Practitioner who will use her discretion (based on the FDA recommendations for treating obesity) to determine if the weight-loss injection is a safe and good option for you. She will carefully screen you by evaluating your past medical history, any current medications you take, your vital signs, and your body mass index (BMI).

You are NOT a good candidate for the weight-loss injection if you have any of the following: diabetic retinopathy, low blood sugar, decreased kidney function, pancreatitis, stomach or intestinal problems, gallbladder disease, medullary thyroid cancer (or a family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma), or multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2. If you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant and/or breastfeeding.

Weight Loss Injection Results:
The weight-loss injection is one of the most effective weight-loss methods on the market, but you shouldn’t expect to see drastic results overnight. Once starting treatment, most people lose an average of 1-2 pounds per week, but this can vary depending on a number of factors. Combining the weight-loss injection with a reduced-calorie diet and regular exercise will maximize your results.

If you experience health problems associated with excess body fat, you should see these conditions improve with treatment. Many people report lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels as a result of their weight-loss. Many patients achieve their weight-loss and health goals within a year and have better long-term success in maintaining their results than those who have not undergone weight-loss injections.

During your consultation, we’ll review the benefits of using weight-loss injections for weight-loss and help you know what to expect after beginning treatment.

What it Treats

Recovery Time & Side Effects

The most common side effects of weight-loss injections are nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea. These typically occur in the earlier stages of treatment and resolve over time. Slowly increasing your dosage under close supervision from your healthcare provider can help you minimize these side effects. Some side effects can be prevented based on water intake and nutrition choices. You should seek medical attention immediately if you experience a change in urine production, vision changes, nausea and vomiting that doesn’t go away, or severe abdominal or stomach pain.
